A naivety of mind boggling proportions

In his two correspondences to Ombudsman John Nero regarding his referral, the Papua New Guinea Correction Services Commissioner Mr Richard Sikani made controversial remarks.

There is no need for higher understanding to decipher its true meaning – it is basically a threat; issued in a manner that boggles the mind. And this manner belongs to a realm between plain foolishness and childlike naivety.

Mr Sikani’s explanation for the use of controversial military vocabulary begs the question of how could it not be a threat when it was an extremely thinly veiled threat.

What went on in Sikani’s mind when he issued his threat in the manner he did? I mean Mr Sikani knows it would get back to him soon, and he would be asked to answer to it; yet he went ahead with his threat. So what made him do it?

I thought long and hard but ended up with an answer that seems ludicrous; at least I thought so. Then his lame excuses to make his action seem intelligent blew my mind. I instead began to wonder if he didn’t need psychological evaluation.

The reasons Mr Sikani issued his threat could be; either he was teasing Mr Nero or he was plain foolish.

Whatever the reason, it hurts to think that there may be many other departmental heads and high office holders here in PNG who are prepared to stoop in order to circumvent public scrutiny.

The Ombudsman Commission is the last line of defense in an otherwise overly corrupt country that desperately needs some sort of intervention-a country where not a single day goes by where a penny from the nation’s coffers is not misapplied.

If the acting Prime Minister is to make his mark against official abuse and corruption that has intentionally being ignored by his predecessor, this is the opportune time. Papua New Guinea needs genuine action against corruption and abuse of public offices. Please quench our great thirst for justice in this land.

Failure to investigate Mr Sikani for allegations of official misconduct and for issuing threats to avert impending action by the Ombudsman Commission will be a price too high for us to pay.
